This book made me cry when I was writing some of the chapters. Erik’s story is hugely powerful writing from a nurse recalling one very special little boy and how being with Erik and making a connection made a real difference and about the power of a storybook and parental love.

This book uses stories written by children, their parents and their nurses from Africa, Australia, America, the UK and elsewhere as a starting point for challenging people’s thinking about children’s pain. Many of the stories are wake up calls for professionals to reconsider their practice and determine that they can and will do better. Other stories model wonderful and compassionate pain care. In the same way that pain has been shown to ‘unmake’ the lives of adults with pain, this book reveals how pain can unmake the lives of children, their families and sometimes their nurses.
