Current work

Current work related to female genital mutilation

As well as ongoing engagement nationally across the UK in projects to support the awareness raising and eradication of FGM, the RCN is also leading on the following projects:

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Travel Health

Education (through awareness raising) and workforce enhancement (creating principles of best practice for nurses and related health care professionals working in the travel health medicine)

Project Aims and Objectives

The aim of this project is to create a resource for nurses working in travel medicine that recognises their unique challenges when caring for women and girls who may be at risk of, affected by or been subjected to FGM.

The objectives are:

  • to create an opportunity for key external stakeholders to discuss with RCN members the specific issues around FGM, which are impacting nurses working in Travel Clinics.
  • to create a resource that would help signpost and clarify recent changes to legislation around FGM, including protection orders and mandatory reporting of cases. This will consist of an A4 poster and accompanying booklet.
  • to disseminate that resource across UK travel clinics.
  • to link the resource to our main RCN Guidance for Nurses and midwives on FGM

Project Life span – November 2015- December 2016
