Nurses' Day

Event guide

A chance to say thank you

Nurses' Day takes place on 12 May each year. Follow this handy guide to make your event extra special.

1. Location

Your Nurses' Day event can take place anywhere - from the canteen to the car park, but make sure it's somewhere that is safe, visible and accessible to all.

Don't forget - you will need permission to hold your event, so make enquiries as soon as possible.

2. Get help

Spread the workload by asking for support from colleagues, friends and family. Simple things like asking others to put up posters, bake cakes or buy milk will help you run the best event you can.

3. Local support

Advertise your event. Contact the local media, put up posters (with permission) and remember to tell people about it when you're at work. Social media is a great way to spread the word.

Contact your regional RCN office for advice on publicising your event.

4. Food and drink

Don’t run short. You can always take leftovers home or share them around later in the day. Make sure your food and drink is fresh and caters for all allergies too.

5. Free materials

Nurses' Day badges, stickers and cocktail sticks are available to order using our online form. You can also download posters and leaflets to help promote your event.

6. Social media

Social media is not only a great way to publicise your event, but it will help share how successful your day has been. Tweet photos to @theRCN and use the hashtag #thankanurse.

7. Celebrate!

Nurses' Day is an opportunity to think about the amazing work you do. Take time to celebrate and talk to people about why nursing is so important.
