Meet with your MSP

RCN members across the UK are campaigning to get the fair pay they deserve

How to contact your MSP:

  • Contact information for your MSP can be found on the Scottish Parliament website.
  • Send your MSP an email or letter
  • Call your MSP's office
  • Search your MSP's website for public drop in sessions
  • Contact your MSP on social media

We would encourage you to contact both your constituency and regional list MSPs.

If you haven't heard back from your MSP after one week, follow up with a call to their office.

Local support MSP

Before arranging a meeting with your MP, please contact your local RCN office. We'll support you every step of the way.

Information to include:

  • Your full name, postcode and place of work. MSPs can only meet with and act on behalf of people who live in their constituency.
  • The reason why you are contacting your MSP, for example: 'To arrange a meeting to discuss nursing issues'.
  • Explain how the issue affects you personally and how this impacts on your MSP's constituency, including the effect on patient care.

What to do at your meeting:

  • Share your story: Explain how poor pay is affecting you, your family and place of work – maybe it’s getting too difficult to recruit new staff and you and your colleagues are bearing the brunt of this. Remember, you’re the expert in what you’ve experienced.
  • Ask your MSP to write to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport: Your MSP can share your story in a letter to Shona Robison and request she recommend a pay award for nursing that is above inflation, to begin the close the gap.
  • Take a picture: Share this on Facebook and Twitter using #closethegap and include your MPs Twitter handle so they can retweet it.

Follow up and feedback:

After your meeting, it's important to follow up with your MSP. This is crucial to build your relationship with your MSP. RCN Scotland can support you to do this.

  •  Ask your MSP to become a nursing champion: This is great way for your MSP to show nursing staff in your constituency that they value and support the work you do. As a nursing champion, your MSP will advocate for you and the wider nursing community in Parliament.
