East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust pension offer

Speaking up on nursing pay

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust is offering Band 5 and 6 nursing staff a higher rate of pay if they are not in the NHS Pension Scheme.

We are concerned about this proposal and its potential impact on our members’ long-term financial security. Help us campaign for the offer to be withdrawn.

Why is the RCN advising members not to take this offer?

The offer of higher pay may seem attractive to nursing staff who are struggling financially. But in the long-term, a pension built up over time is likely to be worth far more than the immediate pay rise that’s on offer.

How is the RCN campaigning against this offer?

We’ve written to the Trust management stating our opposition, and to our members working in the Trust, informing them of the consequences of opting out the NHS Pension Scheme. We've also provided our network of workplace representatives with campaign materials to speak up against this offer.

What support can I get?

You shouldn’t consider leaving the NHS Pension Scheme without taking independent financial advice.

If you are considering taking up this offer, or if you have already done so, and you would like guidance on how to access financial advice, please contact RCN Direct.

RCN members can attend a pensions advice session on Wednesday 12 October 2016.

This will take place at The Lister Hospital, Stevenage, in the Paediatric (Bluebell) Seminar Room Level 2, from 2 - 3.30pm.

Speakers will include:

  • Gerry O'Dwyer, RCN Senior Employment Advisor
  • Keith Hailey, Lighthouse Financial Advice

Places at the session must be booked in advance by emailing carole.vincent@rcn.org.uk with your RCN membership number before Monday 10 October.
