Prepare for your meeting

RCN members across the UK are campaigning to get the fair pay they deserve

How to prepare for your meeting:

  • Request postcards: This summer, RCN members have been filling in postcards asking MPs to commit to lifting the pay cap. You can request these postcards to take to your meeting. They will show your MP the strength of feeling against real-terms cuts to nursing pay in their constituency.
  • Prepare: Know your key messages and be clear about what you are asking your MP to do.
  • Research: Find out what your MP's priorities are. They may have spoken on nursing issues in the past. Hansard Online outlines everything your MP has spoken in Parliament. TheyWorkForYou provides an overview of your MPs voting record. Your MP's website and social media accounts will have details of their work too.

Local support

Once you've secured a  meeting with your MP, please contact your local RCN office.

Set the agenda:

Prepare an agenda before your meeting so you are clear about what you want to discuss, what action you want your MP to take.
Your MP may ask for the agenda ahead of the meeting. If they request one, you can email them some bullet points about what you want to discuss.

What to ask your MP:

  • Ask your MP to pledge to become a nursing champion. As a nursing champion your MP will be an advocate for nursing community in your constituency and represent your views in Parliament.
  • Ask your MP to raise your concerns in the House of Commons, either in a debate or through a parliamentary question which has to formally be answered by the UK Government.
  • Ask your MP if they are happy to take a picture with you and share it on social media. Remember to tag @theRCN and use the hashtag #scrapthecap.

Ask your MP to support nursing staff.

Tell your story:

Your personal experience of issues facing nursing staff and patients will be the most interesting to MPs, and give them reason to support the campaign.
Before your meeting, think about what you want to share and whether you are comfortable sharing your personal experience.
If you take postcards with you, talk to your MP about how you are there to represent nursing staff and patients in your local community.
Your MP may ask questions that you won't have the answer to. It's fine to say that you don't have the information to hand but that you will follow up with it after the meeting.
