These annual awards are an opportunity to celebrate nurses who demonstrate excellence in practice. 

Previous finalists have demonstrated a passion for the nursing profession and exemplify distinction in care, leadership, service and innovation.

The search is on to find the next RCN in Wales Nurse of the Year!

The deadline has now passed for nominations to be submitted for the RCN in Wales Nurse of the Year Awards 2016. The shortlisting process is now taking place in order to determine which candidates will be successfully invited to attend the interview stage. 

For information, the interview stage for successful candidates will take place on the following dates at RCN Wales HQ in Cardiff:

Chief Nursing Officer

Celebrating the contribution of an exceptional nursing or midwifery leader in Wales, who by inspiring others and demonstrating exceptional leadership, has made a significant difference to patient care.

Children and Midwifery

Recognising a Registered Children’s Nurse or Registered Midwife who has made an outstanding contribution to the care of children, young people or the midwifery care of parents-to-be.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

Recognising Specialist Nurses who have applied advance or specialist nursing practice to make an outstanding contribution to patient care, including the introduction of changes that lead to innovative programmes of care.

Community Nursing

Celebrating the achievements of all registrants of the NMC register who have made an outstanding contribution to the care of people in a community-based setting. 

Health Care Support Worker

Celebrating the achievements of Health Care Support Workers who have demonstrated commitment to providing high standards of nursing care.


Recognising a Registered Nurse or Health Care Support Worker who has made an outstanding contribution to humanitarian health care undertaken in response to humanitarian crises resulting from disease, disaster, displacement or conflict

Innovation in Nursing

Recognising nurses and midwives who improve the care of people through innovation.

Improving Individual and Population Health

Recognising a nurse or midwife who has made an outstanding contribution to improving individual and/or population health.

Lifetime Achievement

Recognising a truly exceptional Registered Nurse who is recognised as providing a lasting contribution to the nursing profession.

Mental Health and Learning Disabilities

Recognising an exceptional Registered Mental Health Nurse or Registered Learning Disability Nurse who has made an outstanding contribution to the care of individuals living with  mental illness and/or learning disability.

Nurse Education

Recognising Registered Nurses who have made a significant difference to the development and or delivery of high quality education to those who deliver/ aim to deliver health care.

Mentorship Award

Celebrating a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife who demonstrates an innate understanding of the importance of good mentorship, supporting high quality learning environments, acts as a role model to and invests in existing and aspiring mentors, and who builds and maintains relationships to enable and support mentorship.

Older People’s Commissioner for Wales

Recognises a Registered Nurse or Health Care Support Worker who has made an outstanding contribution to the care of older people in Wales.

Nursing Student

Recognising nursing/midwifery students who have shown exceptional promise during their professional education and or practice placements.

Registered Nurse (Adult)

Recognises a Registered Nurse (Adult) who has made an outstanding contribution to the care of adults.

Research in Nursing

Recognising and rewarding vision, quality and excellence in nursing and midwifery research.
