West Midlands Student Information Officer development programme

Student Information Officers (SIOs) are a network of RCN student members who work closely with the RCN to support and share information with their fellow students.

RCN West Midlands regards the SIO role as vital in ensuring the voice of nursing students across the region is heard by the RCN, employers and nurse education institutions.

We run a three-year learning and development programme to give focus to the work of our SIOs and to help them develop their leadership potential. The programme aims to develop their knowledge and skills in:

  • Gaining a thorough understanding of the RCN, its purpose and its work
  • Enhancing their listening skills and building confidence to speak up for student members across the region
  • Understanding how to make a difference
  • Gaining insights into specific nursing issues
  • Building emotional resilience and wellbeing to support and encourage other students to become active in the RCN
  • Communication and personal presentation

Taking part in the programme is a great opportunity to access continuing professional development and network with peers, share ideas and learn from other nursing professionals and students.

The programme brochure is accompanied by a learning log in which you can summarise the work you do as an SIO at university or on placement. There is space for the learning to be signed off and dated when completed.
