Essentials for nursing: the RCN pocket guide

This credit card-sized tool covers clinical references commonly used in the workplace by health care professionals.

This educational resource is very popular with the RCN’s membership. We are now seeking expressions of interest for new reference cards.

For example:

  • the signs and symptoms of a particular disease and the recommended assessments and course of action
  • a set of principles or key facts 

Dissemination: 20,000 copies of the guide to all new student members and HCAs, plus registered nurse members at some national events

Content: Focus on improving at the point of care

Costs: From £1,000 + VAT

Tools of the trade

This guidance focuses on contact dermatitis, the main work-related skin condition affecting health professionals.

The guide highlights:
  • tips to help health practitioners look after their hands
  • how to select the right gloves at the right time
  • what employers should be doing
  • what to do if health professionals have skin problems or concerns
  • advance preparation of insulin syringes for patients to administer at home.

Last published in 2007, new guidance will:
  • provide clear advice on the criteria for advance preparation of insulin
  • reduce the risk to patients and nurses in leaving pre-prepared medication in their home
  • link to current safety advice and research to ensure best practice
  • refer to well referenced and good quality standard operating procedure for this practice.

Dissemination: 1,000 copies of of the full text guide to be made available to RCN health and safety reps. 10,000 copies of the summary guide to be distributed at RCN events and made available to order

Content: Focus on the prevention, recognition and management of work related-skin conditions for healthcare workers (contact dermatitis)
