NMC requirements for overseas qualified nurses

In order to work as a nurse or midwife in the UK you must apply to join the register of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The NMC requires applicants who trained outside the UK to demonstrate that they are capable of practising safely and effectively, taking into account their qualification, training and experience.

Applicants must also demonstrate they have the necessary knowledge of English to communicate effectively.

Have your say

Do you want to share your experience of the overseas registration process or your views on how it could be improved?

If so, the NMC wants to hear from you, and are running a series of workshop and webinars for August and September.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - New English language testing options for overseas nurses

In November 2017, the NMC made changes to the way in which overseas nurses could prove their knowledge of the English language. The NMC will now accept three pieces of evidence:

  1. A recent pre-registration nursing or midwifery qualification that was taught and examined in English.
  2. Registration and practice for at least one year in a country where English is the first and native language, and where an English language assessment was required for registration.
  3. Achieving the required score in one of two NMC approved English Language tests: the IELTS exam or the ‚ÄčOccupational English Test (OET).
