As part of our Healthy Workplace, Healthy You campaign, the RCN has launched a suite of resources to promote ‘rest, rehydration and refuelling’ amongst the nursing workforce.
The resources were launched to coincide with Nutrition and Hydration week and came out just after the House of Commons Health Committee’s report into the nursing workforce, which made recommendations for the CNO and DoNs to ensure that nursing staff are able to take their breaks and have access to food and drink on a shift.
The resources which include posters provide tips and case studies on improving working environments and promote the following key messages:
To nurse leaders: recognising that it is a challenging time in terms of staffing levels but, in order to retain the staff you have and support them to deliver quality care, ensure their fundamental needs to rest, hydrate and refuel at work are met.
To all nursing staff: Put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others – in other words, in order to deliver quality care, ensure your own needs are met. A break at work isn’t a luxury but a necessity.
The resources can be accessed via the healthy workplace webpage and hard copies of posters and leaflets can be ordered via RCN Direct.
