Thinking of our nursing family in India

Jesudass Johnselvan 19 May 2021 Eastern

Like everyone, I have been distressed to see the images coming from India as the country deals with a devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hospitals are overwhelmed and patients and their families are left desperately seeking help from wherever they can find it. The lack of oxygen and medication means that even for those able to find a hospital bed, effective treatment may not be forthcoming and the nursing staff are left with an impossible task trying to care for their patients without the necessary tools to assist them.
On behalf of all our members in the Eastern region, I would like to send a message of support to our nursing family in India struggling through these pandemic pressures. Our experiences of the pandemic in the UK make us realise how much more difficult it would have been without the resources which we had available. The vaccination programme in the UK also places us in a much more positive situation and we hope this will continue to be the case.
I would also like to send our thoughts to Indian nurses working in this country who have been affected by the loss of family and friends in India. Being unable to be with loved-ones as they fight this terrible disease is incredibly difficult. I appeal to anyone affected to seek whatever support they need at this time.
The RCN has a range of information, guidance and advice to support all our international members in particular, and all RCN members can access a range of support services including counselling, peer support and immigration advice. There are also other organisations which offer support to international nursing staff, including the British Indian Nurses Association (BINA).
I encourage everyone to seek support whenever you need. You may find it useful to check out the RCN’s COVID-19 guidance which includes mental health and well-being support and resources. Please look after yourselves as you look after others.
