A simple step but crucial to success

It’s a message we can’t emphasise enough, says Graham Revie – RCN members need to keep their membership details up to date.

Fair Pay for Nursing
We can all be forgiven for thinking we’re stuck in some sort of hellish Groundhog Day. Another year on and still nursing vacancy rates are at or near record highs. Demand for our services in the community, in care homes, in hospitals continues to increase with every passing week.

And we get another pay offer from the Scottish government that doesn’t meet the expectations of RCN members as called for in our Fair Pay for Nursing campaign – which is why your Scottish Board, Trade Union Committee and Council are recommending you reject it.

We persevere, though. Against all these odds and frequently in spite of how worn down we feel, nursing staff across Scotland turn up for work every day, in every setting where our skills, experience and commitment are required.

And we will persevere in our campaign for Fair Pay for Nursing. We may feel disappointment about the pay offer from the Scottish government but the RCN cannot act without the mandate from members. Our ballot will ask both about whether you accept or reject the offer and, if the majority of members reject the offer, your willingness to take industrial action to improve it.

That’s why, time and time again on social media and other blogs, we are hammering home the message that the RCN needs its members to take one simple step to make sure we are prepared to take the necessary action in the future, whatever that might be.

Even if you’ve done so in the past six months, it’s important to check that key information – for example, preferred email address, mobile number, home address and employer – are current.

Please take just a few minutes to update your details. A simple step but crucial to success.

Your views really do matter – I make no apology for saying again, let’s make sure none of us miss out on getting our voice heard for want of one simple step.
