A Tumultuous Summer

Maggy Heaton 29 Sep 2020 Safe staffing

Interim Regional Board Chair Maggy Heaton reflects on a unique summer in the North West.

I am honoured to be addressing RCN North West members as interim Chair of the Regional Board following Dave Dawes’ decision to stand down since his successful election to Chair of RCN Council. I am delighted to be given this opportunity during my last few months as a Board member before my term of office comes to an end.

I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Dave who has addressed our members through a variety of channels including Facebook Live and Bulletin since taking up the position. I am thrilled that the Chair of Council is both a North West member and represents the North West.

Much has happened since our last eNewsletter and I know this has been in a hugely unsettling time for you all, both in the challenging circumstances you are working in every day during the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty within the organisation around the Presidential and Deputy Presidential elections.

However, we should not forget all the great work going on throughout the organisation as the RCN’s campaign for safe staffing for safe and effective care has resumed along with the launch of the Fair Pay for Nursing campaign which demands a fully funded 12.5% pay rise for all nursing staff across the UK.

The first part of 2020 has been unprecedented which is why your Agenda Committee delayed the start the #RCN2020 programme of debates and events until after the summer. But now more than ever it is important that we discuss as a professional union the future of nursing and whilst I was sorry that we were not be able to meet in person at Congress this year, the Committee has put together a great programme selected from the debates and fringe events for Congress 2020 for #RCN2020

We have already started planning for Congress 2021 in Liverpool 16 to 20 May. Applications for voting members opened slightly later than usual on 1 September. As promised, priority will be given to members who were selected in 2020. You can apply to become a voting member nowThe deadline for applications is 30 October 2020.

If you want to contact me about anything to do with the RCN and how we are working for you, please email me on Maggy.Heaton@reps.rcn.org.uk
