Last night Congress opened to a rousing speech from the RCN President Professor Anne Marie Rafferty, followed by the annual awards ceremony.

We were then treated to, what else in Liverpool, but a Beatles tribute band which had everyone up dancing. Then we had a reception in the exhibition hall.

There are 3,512 delegates registered to attend with a great contingent from South West, all of whom I hope to meet over the coming days.

Susan Masters, South West Regional Director, Helen Hancox, Senior Officer and Tony Aspinal, Service Manager, are here from the South West team and have had a great presence, raising our region's profile.

We had a Council meeting in the afternoon to discuss the conference and prepare for today’s AGM, which is taking place first thing before we move on to the main debates of the day.

I look forward to reporting each day to you and thanks once again for the trust you all put in me to represent all of our members in the South West region.
