Diversity in library collections

Lisa Gardner 6 Oct 2017 Library

In Autumn 2017, the RCN Library and Heritage Centre will host an exhibition and event series – Hidden in Plain Sight’ – focusing on diversity in nursing.

Hidden in plain sight

The nursing family has always been a diverse group; made up of people with different strengths, skills, value systems, backgrounds, and varied and distinct life experiences. The RCN is committed to celebrating and championing diversity, and promoting a culture which values diversity and respects difference.

We are collecting personal stories and artefacts to add to our archive but also want to make sure our book collection includes published works about diversity in nursing. To help us achieve this we need your recommendations for books you think reflect and represent the life, work and stories of nurses, student nurses and health care support workers from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Recommendations will help us develop our collections to be inclusive of the experiences of all RCN members, including Black and Minority Ethnic nurses; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender nurses; and nurses with disabilities.
