I currently work in one of the Belfast hospitals at band 6 level. This banding was only granted after challenging my original banding. My issue is that there is no pathway for career progression from band 5 to 6 for staff in our ward. When current band 6 staff leave, their posts are not being advertised. We are just getting band 5 staff to replace them. My concern is that we will not be able to retain staff on our ward as they will be doing the same job as myself and other band 6 staff but being paid band 5 rate.
My other issue is that band 6 staff are working bank shifts but only being paid at band 5 level, despite working at the same level and carrying out the same duties as their substantive posts. My colleagues and I feel very disillusioned, especially when staff are being flown in from England to cover shifts and being paid top agency rates, as well as getting their flights and accommodation paid for.
