Parking adds to challenges posed within Cambs STP

 Chris Hill 7 Mar 2018

Within the many issues related to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough STP and continuing workforce challenges, everyone may have underestimated the difficulties presented by car parking.

With the imminent arrival of the Royal Papworth Hospital onto the Cambridge Campus this September, there is now a tricky debate to be had around how the organisations on this site can actually provide the right level of car parking needed for both patients and staff.

With much head scratching, there has now been some realisation that the existing arrangements are not adequate to provide everyone with the level of car parking that this site has had to date.

While the RCN and other unions join the debate there needs to be wider discussion with others to really help with a change in the culture of how staff travel to work - not an easy task and one that will pose some difficult choices for organisations.

The message from the employers must be to support staff undertaking shifts – which often mean travel by public transport is not an option - so that this doesn’t affect retention of our existing workforce.
