It’s worth remembering that the NHS England pay deal has delivered an additional £420million in funding to the Scottish Government for NHS pay. This means we went into the negotiations knowing the money was there and we made it clear that the terms and conditions being proposed in England would not be considered.
Negotiations being negotiations the Scottish Government asked for further discussion around four areas of terms of conditions -
- Sickness absence - which will focus on implementation of management processes and crucially, unlike the deal in England, will not remove unsocial hours payments if you are off sick
- Incremental progression – linked to the proposed revised pay structure which reduces the number of bands
- Time off in lieu – review of arrangements to manage time off and ensure staff are compensated for working beyond contracted hours
- Organisational change – reviewing the current arrangements for staff who are displaced though organisational change.
Between us, the NHS trade unions have nominated individuals to negotiate with Scottish Government and the employers on these areas. This won’t start until after the summer and the RCN team will be working to make sure we get the best deal for members and that proposals are shared with you as soon as possible.
