Why I applied for Congress 2019

 Filipe Rego 1 Oct 2018

Independent sector Healthcare Assistant Filipe discusses why he has applied to Congress 2019, and why he would also urge other independent sector colleagues to do so.

I’ve always wanted to go to Congress, but in previous years it’s conflicted with a trip home to Portugal, so next year will be the first year that I am free to go. I have applied to attend as a voting member for my branch.
I’ve previously nursed in Spain and I attended congress events there, which weren’t on the scale of RCN Congress, but were really useful places to find out about new ideas and updates, and the fringe events were always really good.
From what I hear from colleagues about RCN Congress, I definitely wouldn’t be disappointed. I’ve heard from so many people who have attended in previous years that it is a very inspiring experience. One speaker at our recent branch AGM said she had spoken at Congress, and while she had been nervous she felt so empowered afterwards.
I work in a nursing home and I think lots of staff in similar organisations don’t feel that there is much to be done about workplace culture if there are any issues. This is one of the reasons I think my colleagues in the independent sector should go to Congress. If you work in a big NHS trust there are many different social networks to support you, but we must also remember there is a huge membership in the private and other sectors too, and this means there is a huge family to support us here too.
Even if we work in a small workplace, it’s important to realise we are part of a bigger picture, and our voices can be heard at Congress. I am encouraging my colleagues to attend too.
