From nursing cadet to student nurse

Flynn Shucker 29 Sep 2021

I’m Flynn and I did the RCN Price of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme in the middle of the first year of the COVID pandemic.

I was attracted to the scheme because I knew I wanted to do something medically related, but I couldn’t decide which path to take. I thought, and was proved right, that the scheme would give me an insight.

I really enjoyed the course, although it was challenging to do it online rather than, as it should be, in person. IT didn’t always help things run smoothly but the RCN staff running my course were always available to help, support and answer questions. I can’t overstate how important that was. I think to be able to have done the in person would have been great.

The course was really detailed and gave me a really good overview of nursing which is a diverse and varied profession.

The hardest part of the scheme was without doubt the palliative care module, and I can imagine it to be so hard to tell someone their loved one had died. I said this in my university interview, which I passed, without doubt helped by my time doing the nursing cadet scheme.

I am about to head to Staffordshire University to start my course in Adult Nursing and I’m really excited to start my career as a nurse.
