Down on the farm - a day out with the Cyrenians

 Theresa Fyffe 7 Sep 2018

Theresa Fyffe explains how RCN Scotland staff got that feelgood factor helping out with the Cyrenians in Edinburgh.

In August, the staff from RCN Scotland donned their wellies and waterproofs and attended their staff away day at the Cyrenians Farm, located just outside Edinburgh.

Cyrenians is a social enterprise working farm producing fruit, vegetables and eggs; it’s also home to a community of vulnerable young people, many with experience of homelessness. The farm grows food and helps the community to grow people, providing a range of opportunities for individuals to develop skills and confidence as a step towards a settled lifestyle.
On the day, staff took part in a variety of activities from weeding a pumpkin patch and picking apples in the orchard to mucking out the chickens and weaving garlic for sale. Away days are always an excellent opportunity for people to connect outside the workplace, enjoy change from their everyday work schedule and have some fun at the same time! It’s also a great opportunity to provide hands-on help to social enterprises and learn more about the work they do.
The staff, volunteers and residents were delighted with the work RCN staff did to support their farm - equating it to two and half weeks work if they didn't have our help. Our staff are RCN’s best asset and it’s good to know so many hard-working RCN staffers aren’t afraid to get stuck in and get their hands dirty!
We love working and supporting local social enterprises who share our ethos and vision. Cyrenian’s vision is an inclusive society in which we all have the opportunities to live valued and fulfilled lives. RCN Scotland will continue to support organisations like Cyrenians to make that vision a reality.

Roll on our next staff day out!
