The consultation that the RCN is currently undertaking with members in Northern Ireland is a simple survey that asks, on a yes or no basis, if members are prepared to be balloted formally on taking industrial action in support of a fair pay award for 2018-2019.
We are aware from our branch officials and accredited representatives that some members may believe that the current consultation is about deciding whether or not you want to go on strike. This is simply not the case and I would urge all RCN members working in the HSC on Agenda for Change contracts to check the wording of the survey carefully and then respond.
If RCN members decide, through this consultation, that they are prepared to be balloted formally on industrial action, we will then proceed to set out the proposed forms of industrial action, none of which will involve putting patients at risk by striking. We will also clarify NMC guidance in respect of industrial action.
But that decision is further down the line, depending upon the outcome of the consultation. At the moment, the most important issue for RCN members is to make sure that they take a few moments to look at the very simple and straightforward question posed in the survey and let us know if they are prepared to be balloted formally on taking industrial action is support of fair pay for Northern Ireland nurses.
You can complete the survey here and the deadline is 5.00pm on Monday 26 November 2018. Please make sure that you have your say.
