Meet your new student committee member

Lucy Hayes 9 Feb 2021

New RCN West Midlands Student Committee member Lucy Hayes introduces herself and outlines her aims.

Hello! My name is Lucy and I’m the new Student Committee member for the West Midlands.

I'm a third-year adult nursing student at the University of Birmingham. At uni, I'm also academic officer for our nursing society, and I've been involved in the implementation of an interprofessional learning project.

I am a big advocate for the use of Twitter by nurses, as a means of networking, finding support, and learning. As part of this, I have become a member of the @WeStudentNurse team and have learnt a lot about student needs through this work.

I have a particular interest in student funding and have been an advocate for #FundOurFuture. I feel that the student role in the Covid-19 pandemic can be used as a way to demonstrate student nurses’ true worth to the NHS, but I am also concerned about how changes to learning during the pandemic are contributing to financial difficulties of students, and about students who may be losing out on learning due to lack of internet access and an inability to afford computer equipment.

I am also interested in making sure that student nurses get the best learning opportunities possible. Many students express sub-par learning opportunities in placement and I am hoping to do some work to help improve these placements.

I hope to be able to listen to student voices and to help those that I can. I am always open for communications, and you can get in touch with me at RCNstudentWM@gmail.com, on Twitter @lucy_uo and by speaking to your student ambassadors.
