Recruitment and retention has to be at the centre point with all key players regarding STP developments. The challenge of relying on an international model of nursing recruitment versus a “grow-your-own” approach is now emerging among employers with distinction. But it not just about supporting such nurses with clinical competency - they need pastoral care to help them integrate into the UK to make their transition successful. Employers who have not built this in may find those international nurses do not want to remain with an organisation, despite investing in recruitment teams and induction.
What we hope is clear for employers is that without a sustained workforce, international or from within the UK, the STP landscape will be even more difficult for practitioners and patients. Employers have to invest in valuing staff together with supporting their employment rights. Our members still face difficulty regarding inflexibility around working patterns which makes bank and agency that much more attractive than permanent contracts.
