The year 2019 marks the centenary of the Nurses Registration Act.
This legislation inaugurated the first British professional nurses' register and founded the General Nursing Council, the forerunner of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The register itself was created in 1921. Christine Hallett's lecture will explore the work of reforming nurse, Ethel Gordon Fenwick (1857-1947), who led the campaign for nurse-regulation. It will also look more broadly at the changing nature of professional regulation for British nurses across a broad span of time from 1887 (the year the British Nurses’ Association was founded) to the present day.
