'Challenging Times' - Isle of Wight HCA Learning and Development Event

This workshop offers attendees the time and space to think about how they can contribute towards the improvement and development of patient care.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the challenges currently facing the Isle of Wight NHS Trust

  • Describe the role of the CQC
  • Discuss the findings of the recent inspection
  • Explore ways you can continue to develop the quality of care, with particular reference to the identified areas of improvement 

Understand the concept of compassionate leadership and how this could translate into action and change in the workplace to consider the following questions: 

  • Is leadership the answer?
  • What is meant by collective leadership?
  • What can I do? 

Understand the scope of your health care role in relation to identifying and managing risk

  • Individual professional responsibility  
  • Identifying and mitigating risk 
  • Speaking out



10:00 - Introduction to the workshop and important ground rules 

10:15 - The challenges we face: an opportunity to hear about the role of the CQC and discuss the findings of the recent inspection.  

10:45 - Taking on the challenge: an Interactive session in which you will be encouraged to consider your individual, professional and collective contribution toward the improvement of patient care.

11:30 - Tea/coffee

11:45 - Is leadership the answer? In this fun session you will explore the concept of compassionate leadership. 

12:45 - Lunch

13:45 - Competent, compassionate and courageous in my role: this challenging session will encourage you to reflect on your experience and practice, to identify potential risks and how that risk could be mitigated, and to explore your professional responsibilities, and to think about when it may be time to speak out. 

14:30 - Competent, compassionate and courageous in my role: group work.

15:30 - Moving on: an opportunity to summarise learning and evaluate the event
