Join us for this workshop as we chart and explore the patient’s journey from preoperative assessment to discharge. 

Discover what the nurse’s role involves, understand the importance of tailoring your practice to meet the needs of different patient groups and develop your confidence and competence within perioperative nursing.

Whether you are a new staff nurse, returning to practice or an experienced perioperative nurse nurse, this workshop is your invaluable learning opportunity to gain an all round understanding of what goes on within the operating theatre.

This study day is open to all nurses, nursing students, health care assistants/support workers and operating department practitioners working in or intending to pursue a career within anaesthetics, theatre and recovery (PACU) who want to learn best practice within the operating theatre. The workshop is open to RCN members and non-members.

The day will be interactive with ample opportunities for Q&A and discussion – use this opportunity to ask those tricky questions you want answers to.

Planned topics include:

  • The psychology of coming in for an operation – getting the patient ready for theatre
  • Optimising patients
  • The importance and interpretation of the WHO checklist
  • The phenology of theatres: what goes on behind closed doors
  • Surgical site infection
  • The ‘One Together’ toolkit
  • The patient experience in recovery
  • The elderly patient journey.

The days learning will be brought together at the end of the workshop with a case study which you can use to produce a piece of written reflection that counts towards your CPD for revalidation. 

  • Accrue over 5 hours of CPD to count towards your revalidation
  • Produce a written reflective piece to use for CPD
  • Understand the importance of patient-centered care and its link to achieving good surgical outcomes.
  • Take time out to reflect on your professional journey and current practice: what can you do to improve the patient experience and outcomes?
  • Discover best clinical practice approaches, assessment tools and holistic care methods you should be employing to prioritise safety within your workplace setting.
  • Learn the latest advances, research and innovation within the operating department setting and find out about the work of the RCN in supporting standards.
  • Network with like-minded peers from across the UK, build professional relationships and share your experiences / ideas
