RCN North West student nurse members Josh, Josie and Roshanak had the opportunity to meet virtually with some of the region’s most senior nurses recently, as part of the RCN’s Best of Nursing celebration for Nurses Day 2022.

The ‘panel’ consisted of Steven Colfar, Director of Nursing and AHP Workforce, Gill Gibson, Director of Nursing, Quality & Safeguarding Tameside & Glossop Strategic Commission/ Interim Director of Nursing, Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership, Sarah O Brien, Chief Nursing Officer, Lancashire & South Cumbria ICS and Trish Hughes, Director of Nursing (Professional Representation)/Deputy Director of Nursing and AHP Workforce & Professional Nurse Advocate regional lead - NHS England and NHS Improvement.  Nurse Inclusion Lead Deepsi, was also present.

The session, hosted by North West Regional Director Estephanie Dunn, accompanied by Chair of the NW Regional Board Carmel O’Boyle, was an opportunity to discuss important nursing matters between those just starting out in the career and those who have progressed to more senior nursing roles throughout their career.

The students posed questions during and submitted some in advance of the session, surrounding race relations and equality, the support for international nurses and student nurses and the difficulty of finding the right balance between work, study and placements and also of the importance of health and wellbeing.

This – just under – 60-minute watch is just one of the ways in which we are showcasing the Best of Nursing in the region this Nurses Day and is a great insight into some of the broader roles that nurses progress into and demonstrates just how imperative the nursing role and experience is in shaping the success of our local and national NHS structures.

It also supports the launch of the national ‘Here for Life’ campaign which launched on Nurses Day. The campaign showcases the ‘Enabling Professionalism’ framework which sets out a number of criteria in nursing and midwifery practice which describes and demonstrates what professionalism looks like in everyday practice through the application of the Code.  It describes the ‘defining characteristics’ of nurses and midwives in the twenty first century, including being an advocate and leader – all topics discussed as part of this session.

Thanks are extended to everyone who took part for giving up their time to discuss important nursing matters and showcasing the Best of Nursing.
