Commenting on today’s launch of the NHS Wales ‘Choose Well’ campaign, Tina Donnelly, Director, RCN Wales said:
"This annual campaign sends out an important message to the Welsh public, highlighting how necessary it is to ‘choose well’ when accessing health services during the winter months."
"We are acutely aware that during this challenging period there are increased pressures on acute care in the NHS. With this in mind, we urge members of the public to decide on the most appropriate mode of care before opting for A&E, which is intended for serious illness or injury; whether this be self-care, accessing your local NHS services, such as your GP, or attending a Minor Injury Units."
"We must also remember that numbers of health care professionals working over this period remains the same as any other time of year - sometimes even less due to the holiday season."
"With news that we are to have one of our worst winters for decades, and the ever-present demands on the NHS, it is essential that the public back this campaign and help alleviate the pressures of our over-stretched health service and its workers."
