Eastern region: Lets get work life balance working for you - Karen Webb

11 May 2016

We all know that in a profession such as nursing, leaving your job behind when you head home for the night is never easy. You may find it hard to forget what’s happening in your workplace, worrying about patients and the pressures you face on a daily basis.

At the Royal College of Nursing we want to protect our members by working to ensure that maintaining a good work-life balance is possible in their workplace. This is vital for both employees and employers, who benefit from a motivated workforce with reduced staff turnover and work-related stress. This is good for patients too. Some even suggest the phrase should be renamed “life-work balance” to address the imbalance between home and work demands.

While balancing the demands of life in and outside of work is tough, good employers understand the importance of this balance and will go beyond the minimum legal requirements to create an environment where people are supported and want to work. The RCN can help you check how well your workplace is doing in supporting your work-life balance. We have created a Healthy Workplace toolkit which includes a section on work-life balance and a handy check-list to see how your organisation is performing to protect and promote this key part of all our working lives.

For more information and advice please talk to your local RCN rep or visit the Healthy Workplace, Healthy You website at www.rcn.org.uk/healthyworkplace.

Health services could not run without you, so let’s make sure you have all the tools and support you need to help you do your job and enjoy life outside work.
