Eastern region: HCAs and APs - THE RCN NEEDS YOU

21 Sep 2016

Everyone knows the vital work carried out by healthcare assistants (HCAs) and assistant practitioners (APs) in the services provided to patients in the Eastern region and across the UK.

What might not be quite so well-known is the support that the RCN can offer our HCAs and practitioners, both in terms of the learning resources and help available, and competitive membership rates – as low as just £4.10 a month for the first year.

RCN Eastern is keen to make sure that current HCA and AP members know what we can do to help and support them in their roles. If you are an RCN nurse or HCA member already and have colleagues who will also benefit from our support we’d like you to let them know.

We don’t want anyone to feel alone and unsupported. Working in a healthcare setting is challenging and demanding, whatever role you’re in. The RCN will stand alongside, giving you a voice and new skills and will be there if anything goes wrong.

The RCN’s centenary year has included a focus on developing the resources we have specifically available for HCA and AP members working both in inpatient environments and in the community.

For example, did you know:

RCN Forums are providing dedicated updates and relevant information for HCAs and APs and are completely free to join – a perfect way to keep up to speed with developments in your area of work.

• The Talent for Care and First Steps resources are easily accessible on the RCN website to support HCAs in providing quality and effective care for patients. Increased knowledge enables you to care more effectively, and keeps both patients and yourself safer.

• We're also support for HCA and AP members to become RCN representatives – but we still need more!

Becoming an RCN rep is a simple process and one where you’ll be fully supported along the road to accreditation. You can choose to become either a learning rep, a health and safety rep or a steward. You will receive training and be fully supported to make a difference, meaning you can be there for your colleagues in challenging times where cutbacks in staffing and resources can make the job difficult and sometimes feel unsafe. We can support you to take action in a constructive, supported and informed way.

We would also love to hear from you with any news, or topics that you would like us to explore and discuss in our newsletter. Please email with any suggestions. And don’t forget to visit our Facebook page and “like” us for all the latest updates.
