Health and Social Care Committee backs Safe Nurse Staffing Levels Bill

25 Nov 2015

The National Assembly for Wales' Health and Social Care Committee (HSCC) has voted in favour of phase 2 of the bill.

RCN Wales is very pleased that the HSCC has voted to support the introduction of legislation for safe nurse staffing levels in Wales. The Bill will now progress to Stage 3.

All parties within the National Assembly for Wales have shown their support for this initiative. We are particularly grateful to Kirsty Williams AM, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, who submitted a private member’s bill asking for legislation for safe nurse staffing levels in hospitals.

Tina Donnelly, Director RCN Wales, said: “The delivery of high quality patient care depends on the skills and experiences of nurses delivered in a safe environment with safe nursing numbers.  This vote demonstrates that health is a top priority in Wales.”

“We are pleased to announce this fantastic news, which wouldn't have been possible without the rallying support of our members. We are grateful to all of our members for ensuring their voices were heard by Assembly Members regarding this important piece of lawmaking in Wales."

"This bill is the first of its kind in the UK and the key issue is that patients in Wales will benefit tremendously if this law is passed. The RCN in Wales will continue to campaign for this law to protect patient care throughout the next phase."
