History of Nursing Group

The speaker on the day will be Dianne Yarwood who will be talking about entry to nurse training between 1860 and 2013

29 Jul 2016

The next meeting of the London and South East Group will be held on 1 September 2016.

On May 31 2001, Edith Parker, who was then Chair of the RCN History of Nursing Society brought together a group of nurses with an interest in nursing history. The aim at that time was for a series of local groups to be established across the UK and the London group has been the most successful to date.

The idea of the group was and continues to be, to share enthusiasms and take forward the study and exploration of nursing history. The decision was made to hold quarterly meetings at the RCN headquarters and to invite historians from related disciplines as appropriate.

The group that was set up in London recently marked its 15th anniversary with a presentation by Mary Spinks speaking about her autobiography ‘From SRN to CBE’.  A very lively and engaging event was followed by the ‘business meeting’ where members discussed and explored issues of interest and shared feedback from conferences and events.

The group continues to meet on a quarterly basis and is generously support by London Region where the meetings are held, usually on the first Thursdays of March, June, September and December. There is no formal joining process, we simply ask that members engage in and enjoy the meetings and provide us with their contact details.

The next group meeting is on 1 September at 4pm at the London Region offices on the 5th floor at RCN headquarters. The speaker is Dianne Yarwood who will be talking about entry to nurse training between 1860 and 2013. On the 8 December the meeting is being devoted to shared memories of Christmas in hospital.

Do come along and join us or contact Zoe Jammeh to join the mailing list.
