London nursing shortage raised with Mayor Boris Johnson

6 Jan 2015

Assembly Member Nicky Gavron has raised RCN concerns about London’s nursing shortage with Mayor Boris Johnson.

Citing figures from RCN London’s recent ‘Safe Staffing Report 2014’, Nicky highlighted the shortfall of nurses in London and asked how he planned to help health care staff with rising housing costs that often deter them from working in the capital.

Nicky Gavron said: “The Royal College of Nursing showed that we now have a shortfall in the capital of 8,000 nurses and the reasons they gave were that it was mainly due to spiralling housing costs.  Do you not think that nurses should be able to live close to where they work?”

The Mayor agreed that more affordable homes were needed in London.
