Hospital Matron Elaine Collins, who showed her around, said: “We were delighted to welcome the RCN President to Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, The Chesterfield. When her predecessor visited some years ago, the whole place was still a building site, so it was good to have the chance to show the newest president how much we have achieved with the finished product: a busy, up-and-running hospital.”

Cecilia said: “I was pleased to meet some very inspiring nurses and was impressed by the facilities at the hospital. They made us very welcome and I witnessed a positive environment for both staff and patients. Staff were freely open about their views which was encouraging to listen to. I was delighted that they had taken the time to make us a beautiful cake to celebrate our centenary year.”

RCN Regional Director Jeannett Martin said: “We are very excited that the President took time out of her busy schedule to visit our region. As a practising nurse in London, Cecilia is well aware of the daily challenges nursing staff face.”

In her elected role as RCN President, Cecilia is the figurehead representing over 430,000 nursing staff. As such, she functions as a powerful voice on their behalf, and therefore enjoys meeting and talking to them as often as she can. By seeing them in action in the many different types of settings nursing staff work in, she can hear about the issues facing them in their workplaces and be in a better position to represent them and their interests. The visit to Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital The Chesterfield took place on Wednesday 20 April.
