Fair pay for nursing: Nursing staff on Isle of Man willing to consider industrial action

2 Aug 2022

Huge turn turnout in RCN ballot over ‘insulting’ pay offer finds the majority of Manx Care nursing staff would be willing to take industrial action.

RCN members at pay rally with placard 'Time to pay nursing staff fairly' Nursing staff on the Isle of Man have said they are willing to take industrial action over their pay award.

More than three-quarters of RCN members employed by Manx Care took part in a ballot held last month.  More than 80% said the pay award of 4% for 2021/22 and 2022/23 was unacceptable, and more than half said they’d would be willing to take industrial action over the issue.

Carmel O’Boyle, Chair of the RCN North West Regional Board, said the turnout and ballot result demonstrates the anger and upset members are feeling.

“Members want recognition for their skill, expertise and immense contribution they have made and continue to make to the local health population,” she said. “We need the government and Manx Care to step up and show how much they value them. An even lower pay offer than the rest of England is just insulting.”

The results of the ballot have now been fed back to Manx Care and the Isle of Man health minister.  The RCN North West Board will meet to determine next steps.

RCN members working for the NHS in England and Wales will soon be balloted on industrial action following their below-inflation pay awards.

The situation in Northern Ireland is complex as a government hasn’t been formed following elections in May. We continue to demand the immediate restoration of the Northern Ireland government to address the escalating nursing crisis.

Members working in the NHS in Scotland are currently being balloted on the Scottish government pay offer for 2022-23.

Make sure that the RCN has your correct job title, employer details and home address, so that we can send you your ballot paper and you can have your say on pay.
