The Royal College of Nursing Wales responds to the expansion of the Covid-19 booster programme in Wales

Responding to the announcement on the expansion of the COVID-19 booster programme, RCN Wales Associate Director of Nursing (Employment Relations) Nicky Hughes said:  “The accelerated vaccine plan recommended by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation is very ambitions but essential for Wales.  Nursing staff have been in the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic caring for people in their homes, residential care and in hospitals. They have also delivered the bulk of the vaccination programme to date. With current vacancies at 1719 in the NHS alone, how does the Welsh Government expect to meet these proposed targets?  Health care staff are mentally and physically exhausted from the toll this virus has taken yet they are expected to give much more.

If the nursing workforce is expected to continue looking after the health and well-being of the people of Wales it is not too much to ask that the Welsh government and employers look after theirs.  This includes better pay improvements to work environments, continued access to safety equipment, access to continuing professional development and providing a flexible approach to working patterns. “
