Royal College of Nursing responds to Government pledge on antimicrobial resistance

Responding to the Government pledge on fighting antimicrobial resistance RCN Professional Lead for Infection Prevention and Control, Rose Gallagher said:

“Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest challenges facing modern healthcare and this is a welcome investment to confront this challenge.

“It places extreme pressure on the effective prevention and treatment of an ever increasing range of infections and potentially returns modern medicine to the pre-antibiotic era.

“If we do not take action now the impact on the way we treat patients will be profound, the prevention of infection underpins efforts to reduce the need for antibiotics.

“Education of the public, and healthcare workers is key and the RCN are proud to have launched an innovative education programme to reinvigorate infection control education across health and social care, as a contribution to this global effort.

“We look forward to the opportunity of working with colleagues across the health and social care sector to tackle this ever increasing risk.”
