Responding to plans from the Labour Party to bring in Fair Pay Agreements to improve pay, terms and conditions in the social care sector, RCN General Secretary and Chief Executive Pat Cullen said:
"Fair pay for staff working in social care must at least keep parity with the NHS and other employers who also offer other terms and conditions such as flexible working and wellbeing support to workers.
"Better pay, terms and conditions is a good starting point to undo years of mismanagement and address the chronic vacancies that blight the health and care sectors. However, the unfortunate reality is there isn’t enough educated, experienced nursing staff to meet our health and care needs now or in the future.
"We need to see a fully costed, fully funded workforce strategy that takes stock of where we are now and what needs to be done to ensure everyone who needs health and care services gets the quality care they deserve."
