Whistleblower nurse used Facebook to raise concerns Colin Toseland, a nurse at the Glan Clwyd hospital in north Wales, has escaped being struck off after an NMC disciplinary panel acknowledged that he was passionate about his job and a capable nurse. Toseland had complained on social networking site Facebook about the state of wards and surgical theatres, and the level of support offered to nursing staff. He also wrote an article in the Nursing Times exposing the stress that he and other medical workers were under.

GPs told to open surgeries until 8pm every day The Prime Minister has said that he wants to offer more patients the chance to visit a GP in the evening or at weekends. Lack of round-the-clock GP care is being blamed for soaring A&E attendances. A 50 million pilot scheme in nine areas of England will see surgeries able to bid for funding to open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week.

NHS managers being paid via private agencies An investigation by the Daily Telegraph has found examples of senior NHS managers being hired as interims via private agencies. 24 managers were paid rates of more than 1000 a day during 2012/13 including 11 executives on more than 300,000 a year.

Some London hospital accident and emergency departments (A&E) are already treating the amount of patients seen during the peak of winter demand last year, according to a leaked document seen by the Health Service Journal.
