Meet with your MP

RCN members across the UK are campaigning to get the fair pay they deserve

How to contact your MP:

  • Send your MP an email or letter, or call your MP's office and speak to a member of their staff to request a meeting
  • Search your MP's website for public drop in sessions and availability of local surgeries
  • Contact your MP on social media

Contact information for your MP can be found on the Parliament website.

If you haven't heard back from your MP after one week, follow up with a call to their constituency office.

Information to include when asking to meet with your MP:

  • Your full name, postcode and place of work. MPs can only meet with and act on behalf of people who live in their constituency.
  • The reason why you are contacting your MP, for example: 'To arrange a meeting to discuss nursing issues'.
  • Explain how low pay affects you personally and the impact on other nurses working in your MP's constituency. It will also be important to explain the effect on patient care.

What to do at your meeting:

  • Share your story: Explain how low pay affects you, your family and your colleagues – maybe it’s getting too difficult to recruit new staff and patient safety is compromised. Remember, you’re the expert!
  • Take a picture: Share this on Facebook and Twitter using #closethegap and include your MP's Twitter handle so that they can retweet it.
  • Follow up and feedback: After your meeting, it's important to follow up with your MP. This is crucial to build your relationship with your MP. Your local office can support you to do this.
  • Ask your MP to become a nursing championThis is great way for your MP to show nursing staff in your constituency that they are committed to valuing and supporting the work you do. As a nursing champion, your MP will advocate for you and the wider nursing community in Parliament.
