Scrap the cap

RCN members across the UK are campaigning to get the fair pay they deserve

About Scrap the Cap

This summer, thousands of nursing staff across the UK campaigned to scrap the 1% cap on their pay.

On 10 October, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced in the House of Commons that the pay cap had been scrapped.

This showed that the RCN and our members are a force to be reckoned with, but there is still work to do to to secure fair pay for nursing staff.

14% real-terms fall in nursing pay since 2010.

What happens next?

The next pay award for nursing staff must be above inflation and the NHS must not be asked to make cuts to pay for it.

We have until 18 December to submit evidence to the Pay Review Body – the body that makes recommendations to the UK Government on NHS pay.

At the same time, RCN negotiators will be exploring what Jeremy Hunt means by ‘more flexible negotiations’ and will do their utmost to achieve the best possible deal.

The process will run into spring 2018. Until then, we must continue to apply pressure on the UK Government – through face-to-face meetings with MPs – to ensure that the pay award closes the gap on years of real-terms pay cuts.
