Mona Grey Lecture – We refuse to cope: The past, present and future of our nursing voice!

20 May 2026, 12:30 - 13:15

  • Room 1A, ACC Liverpool , Kings Dock , Liverpool Waterfront , Liverpool , L3 4FP
Hosted by the Activism Academy

The Mona Gray Lecture is focused on HOPE!

Throughout the RCN’s 110-year history, nursing staff just like you have joined together to raise the voice of nursing and create real change.

Join RCN Chief Nurse Lynn Woosley as she walks you through our rich history of RCN members refusing to cope with unsafe staffing and low pay.

Did you know that in 1977, at the Mayday Hospital in Croydon, RCN members threatened to close understaffed wards, and hospital authorities were forced to close 36 beds? Or in 1969, the Raise the Roof campaign, nursing staff won the single largest increase in salary in the history of nursing, 22%.

From lifting professional standards to winning pay increases, members like you have been instrumental in these victories. Fast forward 50 years and our profession is yet again facing similar injustices but now it is our turn to not only “raise the roof but lift the floor too!”
