Early detection: the key to reversing the liver disease tsunami and rising liver cancer death rates
20 May 2026, 12:30 - 13:15
Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), caused by fat accumulation in the liver, is rapidly becoming the leading cause of liver disease. With mortality quadrupling in 50 years, and liver cancer being the fastest rising cause of cancer death.
Alcohol, viral hepatitis, and obesity remain the main drivers. One fifth of adults exceed recommended alcohol limits, and 64% of UK adults are overweight/obese, meaning that 90% of cases are reversible if caught early, but most people remain undiagnosed until advanced stages. This makes screening essential, as lifestyle changes can halt or reverse early disease and significantly improve long-term outcomes.
