Free birthing and the implications for maternity care in the UK
20 May 2026, 08:00 - 08:45
Free birthing, also known as unassisted or wild birth, is an increasingly visible childbirth choice that excludes medical support. Often confused with home birth, free birthing carries significantly higher risks for mothers and babies.
Midwives and obstetricians have raised concerns about preventable harm, misinformation, and the influence of non-medical advocacy groups, such as the ‘for-profit’ Free Birth Society, that dispense health advice.
This session will explore the clinical, ethical and educational challenges posed by free birthing, examine impacts on maternal and neonatal outcomes, and highlight the essential role of nursing and midwifery professionals in safeguarding safe, evidence-based maternity care practice.
