Education, sustainability and the climate crisis – empowering change in out-of-hospital nursing

20 May 2026, 17:45 - 18:30

  • Room 3B, ACC Liverpool , Kings Dock , Liverpool Waterfront , Liverpool , L3 4FP
Hosted by District and Community Nursing Forum, RCN Education Forum & General Practice Nurses’ Forum

Climate change is a recognised health emergency, with evidence from the Lancet Countdown demonstrating escalating heat-related illness, and deepening health inequalities. These environmental pressures are shaping the health and care landscape, particularly in out-of-hospital and community settings where nurses play a pivotal role.

This interactive session will explore the critical role of education in empowering nurses to take meaningful climate action. Drawing on national and international efforts, we will showcase new RCN learning modules designed to boost understanding of how the climate crisis impacts health, care delivery, and nursing practice.

Building on the District and Community Nursing Forum’s work, the session will highlight practical, evidence-based case studies from the RCN’s Small Changes, Big Differences campaign, demonstrating how out-of-hospital teams are reducing emissions, improving resource efficiency, and shaping low carbon, person-centred care pathways.

Attendees will be invited to actively contribute by sharing examples, debating priorities, and helping shape future RCN educational developments.
