Thirteen members of the team decided to take part in the review and, while each application had to be submitted individually, they approached the process as a collective effort. Supporting each other was key. Not everyone felt confident with the digital aspects of the process, so the team worked together informally, drawing on each other’s strengths. Those who felt more confident with writing or navigating the process supported others, helping to share the workload and maintain momentum.
One of the most challenging aspects of the process was understanding the job evaluation system, particularly the 16 factors used to assess roles. It took time for the team to fully grasp what the panel was looking for and how to provide clear, concise evidence within the character limits. Early on, this often led to time being lost by including too much detail or not directly answering the question.
The process from starting the application to first submissions took around 10 months. RCN Scotland supported the team with online and face-to-face sessions, drop-in visits, and clear guidance on how to approach the application and gather evidence. This support motivated the team to fully engage with the process and helped them gain confidence in their applications.
The outcome has been extremely positive. The first four applications were successful within six months, much quicker than expected as many had anticipated a longer process and the possibility of appeal. Further applications are currently at panel, with the remaining submissions still to be completed.
A member of the team said: “The process and result have brought a strong sense of recognition and validation within our team. Achieving band 6 reflects the level of skill, responsibility, and complexity involved in our roles, and acknowledges the work we carry out every day in supporting patients through rehabilitation and discharge.
“We would encourage other band 5 nurses to consider the review process if they feel their role has developed. While it is not an easy process and does require time and effort, it is achievable -particularly with the support and guidance that is available.
“For our team on Lindsay Ward, there were misconceptions and initial hesitations early on, and getting everyone on board was not without its challenges. However, through persistence, teamwork and mutual support, the process has proven to be worthwhile.”
