RCN members in Scotland vote to accept NHS pay offer

RCN members in Scotland have spoken on pay and accepted offers for the next two years.

NHS pay deal
Since mid-April, RCN members in Scotland working in the NHS on Agenda for Change contracts have been voting on a pay offer for 2025-26 and 2026-27 from the Scottish government.

Around half of you who were eligible to vote took part. Of those, 60% voted to accept the offer.

We will now report the result at a meeting of the joint health trade unions tomorrow (16 May).

We expect the increase for 2025-26 to be paid in June salaries and backdated pay (to 1 April 2025) to be paid in July salaries.

Julie Lamberth, Chair, RCN Scotland Board said: “Once again, I’d like to thank all our members who cast their vote in the consultation for your participation. Yet again you voted in big numbers. We continue to believe it is right for you, our members, to make the decision and you have had your say. We rely on understanding your strength of feeling on pay offers to inform the next steps.

“A significant minority of you voted to reject the offer, demonstrating continued frustration and concern about the nursing workforce crisis facing Scotland’s NHS. We know the lack of recognition and relentless pressure on our NHS services has left many of you considering your future in the profession. The link between low pay, staff shortages and patient safety remains, and we will continue to make the case to the Scottish government for reform to achieve fair pay.”

Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Director, said: “You are the ever-present, safety critical workforce across the whole of health and care. Current wages do not reflect this, even after this pay increase has been made. Fair pay is vital to retain and recruit nursing staff, to fill the thousands of vacant nurse jobs and to ensure people receive the care they deserve.

“We will continue to lobby the Scottish government hard on reforming the Agenda for Change pay scheme and implementing the recommendations of the Agenda for Change review.”
