RCN Northern Ireland Nurse of the Year 2025
Kelly Forbes
GP mental health nurse
Newry and District GP Federation
Mental health need in the locality served by Kilkeel Medical Practice is extremely high. The Southern Health and Social Care Trust area has the second highest suicide rate in Northern Ireland, is in the top 20% of deprived areas, and has significant health inequalities linked to mental ill health. Kelly has been active in partnership working in the locality to address need. This includes setting up a men’s group, providing trauma eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing [EMDR] therapy, partnering with the local college and bringing student counsellors to the surgery, and developing a number of psycho-educational videos that are easily accessible on YouTube for patients and staff to signpost to. These cover guided grounding techniques, the panic cycle, guided breathing techniques, sleep hygiene, women’s health and thought challenging. Plans are underway to launch the videos across the trust area and then regionally.
According to the Department of Health, almost 70% of patients need no onward referral to secondary care since the deployment of mental health practitioners in GP practices. Her work has been evaluated via a patient survey, feedback from colleagues, and quarterly returns from the Department of Health. One patient wrote: “I cannot get over the change in myself. For the first time in years, I can say I don’t feel down. After years of medication, this is life changing. Kelly was fantastic and easy to open up to. She has been an absolute lifeline for me.” Another said, simply: “Kelly literally saved my life - thank you”. The judging panel was impressed with Kelly’s expertise and commitment to partnership working in the interests of patients.
